Sweetheart Scams 101
What is a sweetheart scam?
A sweetheart scam, also called a romance scam, is when a scammer develops a strictly online romantic relationship with a victim. The scammer will then continually ask the victim to send them money for different “emergencies”. Typically, the scammer will reach out via social media or an online dating site.
What are some common signs of a sweetheart scam?
· You have never met your “significant other” in person – something always comes up when you do make plans to meet them.
· They confess their “love” for you super-fast.
· They constantly have “emergencies” and need you to send money to them fast.
How do you avoid sweetheart scams?
· Don’t send money, gift cards, or gifts to someone you have not met in person.
· Don’t share any of your sensitive personal information, such as your Social Security number and your online banking information.
· Be careful what you share online – any information can be used against you.
· Be care if someone you met online will never meet you in person – they always have excuses.
· If you think that your online relationship may be a scam, stop contacting that person immediately!
